what it says on the tin. sadly did not come with matching stamina or control. eden is constantly in the gym practicing and trying to build herself up, and has been known to rip doors off hinges by accident. when she overuses her powers, she sometimes requires days of rest to recuperate, which is fine. willy can just take control. it's fine!! it's FINE!!

time dilation
eden can slow or hasten time, but only in a way that affects her own physicality (essentially fast forwarding or slow-moing her own movement). the hard limits of this ability have yet to be discovered, as she is nervous about the implications and has already kind of ruined her own life because of them. (oocly, eden hasn't figured out that this isn't just a super speed/motion manipulation ability, which is mostly what she uses it for except when meditating. slo mo meditation is amazing, actually.)

PERSONALITY

eden is a true taurus with the capacity to be extremely dedicated in her pursuits when they interest her. still, her curiosity has traditionally centered mainly around her own comfort and desires, meaning she comes across as somewhat fickle when bored or under-stimulated. she can affect a systematic and controlled approach that makes her seem far more secure and grounded than she actually is.

it has never been a requirement (until now) for eden to buckle down and work very hard at anything. she often has unrealistic and naive ideas about what is possible that come across as dreamy and sweet until reality slaps her in the face. most things in life have come easily to her, so why wouldn't this always be true? when the truth proves otherwise, eden is bratty, headstrong and occasionally manipulative unless it requires too much effort. her upbringing taught her that people pleasing, telling white lies and making others comfortable is a great prerequisite for getting what you want. that said, she usually at least intends to be kind and thoughtful and achieves this with the most sincerity when she likes you.

shyer than she seems, eden hides behind instagram platitudes to keep from interrogating or revealing her private emotions (which make her cry, a lot, sometimes in public). she hates when things are ugly or difficult, especially in front of other people. her current "situation" is a crash course in existentialism, and there's an electric undercurrent of anxiety accompanying everything she does now. she has become obsessed with mindfulness and inhabiting the current moment with as much clarity as possible, which is difficult when you struggle with entitlement on a fundamental level and are also constantly terrified of getting locked in a void FOREVER AND EVER with no warning. so far, eden mistakes having no emotions for zen, and strives for this at all times. escapism is her greatest vice and she longs to be totally numb.

whew!!! at her best, though, eden is playful, friendly, generous and sentimental. she has an equally long memory for happy moments and cute details about her friends as she does slights, insults and rejections, though she rolls both around in her brain longer than most.

APPEARANCE

5'5" and built, long dark hair, pretty and neat in an incredibly practiced way. constantly wears expensive athleisure. bit of a sneakerhead. has a signature rose pink lipstick shade. tattoo of butterfly and heart on the back of her right arm.

HISTORY

eden was born in Chengdu, China circa 1997. her mother died in childbirth, and her grieving father moved the family to the States for a fresh start shortly afterward. he remarried his business partner's sister almost immediately, and eden's half-brother came into the picture within a year and a half. it was a lot of change in just a little time. but things settled down after that.

the chen family landed in sunny San Diego. despite the rosiness of eden's nouveau riche christian upbringing there -- bilingual nannies and expensive vacations, tutors in every subject, a pony named Tinkerbell, a swimming pool, etc -- there was always a little emptiness gnawing at her belly that megachurch never filled. maybe boredom. after all, not much more was expected of her than keeping face and eventually helping out with the family business. it was easy to fall into patterns of leisure and consumption that, though sumptuous and pretty, felt fairly meaningless most of the time.

eden ended up following a crush to UC Boulder after highschool (not valedictorian, but close!). weird choice on the outside, but majoring in Marketing saved her from having to justify it to her father too much. (in case you're curious, said crush started dating someone else and got married at 22, yikes.) in the end, the taste of freedom college afforded was too delicious, and eden quickly realized that as long as she kept her grades up she could do basically anything she wanted. her aimlessness led her to seek meaning in strange and occasionally debaucherous places, and by the time graduation rolled around she had no idea what she wanted except not to go home.

so she stayed in boulder. she worked at a gym. and she... stayed in boulder. and she worked at a gym. she went clubbing and did a lot of yoga and meditation retreats. she stayed in boulder. and she worked at a gym. dad sent her money. and she...

years passed by accident. she achieved nothing of note except doing a lot of molly and ego death at a forest rave. maybe the universe was preparing her for what was to come.

basically, one day something truly uncool happened while she was hooking up with a current obsession. she disappeared. it was kind of like dying, except she eventually exited the void and realized days had passed with no explanation. then it kept happening, convincing eden that she had lost her mind (finally!). that is, until one day she snapped back to reality at willy's job in the back of a shitty kitchen. she did not know how to cook on the line, and it almost cost him his position and his coworkers their sanity when she suddenly popped into existence where he had been standing. so they finally figured it out! ...unfortunately, it took seven weeks to do.

surprise! eden was a liminal. and so was willy. and they both had special powers they didn't know how to use. and her dad was really pissed off when she finally slunk back to him for help after going AWOL for actual months. weimin told her to keep it a secret and directed the pair to IRIS. IRIS could fix it. IRIS will fix it. right? ... hello?

NOTES

eden is currently sharing her body with william cobb, her no. 1 crush. yes, that is as torturous as it sounds. they essentially occupy the same space in reality, meaning that only one can "front" at a time, though they are actively working to separate (eventually, hopefully, please). at first they had little control over this and would pop in and out of existence randomly, but with time they've gained the ability to swap on command. whoever is out can live life almost normally, save for occasionally being able to hear the other as a little voice in the back of their head (usually saying "please let me out.") it's awkward. notably, the pair also seem to share damage -- if one scrapes their knee or goes a little too hard, the other will feel and see the effects when they come out.

not fronting feels kind of like being in a white waiting room with no view out, though with practice eden has managed to make it kind of homey in there. she lives in constant fear of losing control over their shared ability again, or worse, getting locked in willy's brain forever, and is extremely annoying about adhering to their "schedule" lest this occur.
